  • It is my belief that Western science is often taughtalone and by itself and geological science data is what most students learn in school. This science is used to construct a timeline of climatic events, hypothesize about what happened to the land and what things looked like in ancient times and after climatic natural disasters. However, Western scientific data lacks one important aspect, detailed eye-witness testimony. Indigenous Oral History traces back thousands and thousands of years. In the case of thisessay, over 11,500 years ago. Indigenous histories tell how people lived and survived on the land 11,500 years ago, what the land looked like and what climatic changes occurred on the land over thousands of years. This information was passed down from generation to generation through oral traditions that were never altered or changed. These histories show a more personal view of ancient times when climate events occurred, and they convey information about the land, from the people who actually saw the changes happen.

This approach of using Indigenous histories alongside Western geological data will be fundamentally different from the way geological events are usually talked about. I will not be using Indigenous histories to back up Western science data but will be using Western science to add the approximate time in history that these Indigenous Oral histories happened. I will be focusing more on the historical information that these histories share, and the similarities of what people experienced during a natural disaster, rather than focusing only on Western scientific geological data. By using both modalities together in a way that does not prioritize Western science above Indigenous science, but that instead highlights the history of the people who have lived on this land for time immemorial, and who have history from millennia ago, I can help to contribute to decolonizing our view of West Coast Canadian geological history.
